How We Increased a Client's Leads by 240% with a Website Redesign

When a Norfolk law firm came to us in mid-2023, they had a problem that's more common than most business owners realize: a website that looked professional enough on the surface but was quietly failing them in every measurable way. In the six months after redesigning their site, their monthly lead volume increased by 240%. Here's exactly what changed and why it worked.

The Situation Before

The firm had a website that was approximately six years old. It had been built by a general freelancer who knew WordPress but not conversion design or SEO. On paper it seemed fine — it had their practice areas listed, an about page, and a contact form. But the numbers told a different story:

  • Average page load time: 6.4 seconds on mobile
  • Mobile bounce rate: 78%
  • Monthly contact form submissions: 4–6
  • Google ranking for their primary practice area + city: page 3

Most visitors were landing on the homepage from a Google search, finding a slow, hard-to-navigate site, and leaving without taking any action. The firm was spending money on Google Ads to drive traffic to a site that couldn't convert it.

Our Diagnostic Process

Before touching any design, we spent two weeks in diagnostics. We ran a full technical SEO audit, analyzed heatmaps and session recordings, reviewed their competitor landscape, and conducted keyword research specific to their practice areas in the Hampton Roads market.

What we found:

  • Their site had zero internal linking between practice area pages
  • No page had a clear primary call to action above the fold
  • Their phone number was visible only in the footer
  • They had no testimonials or case outcomes displayed anywhere
  • The site used a stock photo of a generic courthouse — no photos of their actual team
  • Page titles and meta descriptions were either missing or auto-generated

What We Changed

Performance overhaul

We rebuilt the site on a clean, lightweight stack rather than a plugin-heavy WordPress installation. Load time dropped from 6.4 seconds to 1.8 seconds on mobile. This alone improved their Google rankings meaningfully, since page experience is a confirmed ranking factor.

Mobile-first design

Over 70% of their traffic came from mobile. Their old site had been designed for desktop and technically "worked" on mobile — but it was hard to navigate, the text was small, and buttons were difficult to tap. We designed the new site mobile-first, with thumb-friendly navigation and a persistent header with a click-to-call button.

Clear calls to action on every page

Every page on the new site has a single, clear primary action: "Schedule a Free Consultation." It appears above the fold on the homepage, at the end of every practice area page, and in the sticky navigation. We reduced the cognitive load — instead of giving visitors five different options, we made one path obviously right.

Real trust signals

We replaced the stock courthouse photo with a professional photo shoot of the attorneys. We added a prominent testimonials section with real client quotes (with permission). We created a "Results" page highlighting case outcomes. For a law firm, trust is the primary purchase decision factor — and the old site had none of it on display.

In A/B testing, pages with real photos of the attorneys consistently outperformed pages with stock photography by 30–40% on engagement metrics. People hire people, not logos.

SEO-optimized practice area pages

The old site had one generic "Practice Areas" page listing their services in bullet points. We created individual, substantive pages for each practice area — each optimized for local search terms, with original content, FAQs, and internal links. Within 90 days, four of those pages ranked on page one for their target keywords.

The Results at 6 Months

  • Monthly contact form submissions: 4–6 → 17–22
  • Phone calls from website: Not tracked → 35–45/month
  • Mobile bounce rate: 78% → 41%
  • Organic search traffic: +180%
  • Google Ads cost-per-lead: Decreased 55% (same budget, more conversions)

Total lead increase across all channels: 240%.

What This Means for Your Business

This isn't an unusual outcome — it's what happens when a website is built for conversion instead of just for appearances. The old site wasn't ugly. It wasn't embarrassing. It just wasn't doing its job.

If your website is more than three years old and you haven't measured its performance recently, there's a good chance it's quietly costing you leads every day. The traffic is there — the question is whether your site is capturing it.

We offer a free website review for local businesses where we walk through your current site's performance and identify the specific changes that would have the biggest impact on your lead volume. See our web development services or reach out and we'll take a look.
