Google Ads vs. Facebook Ads: Which Is Right for Your Business?

It's one of the most common questions we hear from small business owners: "Should I be running Google Ads or Facebook Ads?" The short answer is that both platforms work — but they work differently, for different types of businesses, and for different goals. Choosing the wrong one means burning budget without results.

Here's how to think about the decision.

The Core Difference: Intent vs. Interruption

This is the most important concept to understand before spending a dollar on either platform.

Google Ads are intent-based. Someone types "emergency plumber Virginia Beach" into Google — they have a specific problem and they are actively looking for a solution right now. Your ad appears at the top of the results. You're not interrupting them; you're answering a question they're already asking. That's powerful.

Facebook Ads are interruption-based. You're showing your ad to people who are scrolling their feed and were not thinking about your product or service. You have to stop the scroll, generate interest, and guide them toward action — a much longer journey. But the targeting capabilities mean you can reach exactly the right person with exactly the right message.

When Google Ads Win

Google Ads tend to outperform when:

  • Your service solves an urgent or high-intent need. Plumbers, HVAC companies, emergency locksmiths, lawyers, and dentists all see strong returns because people search for them when they need them now.
  • You're in a service business with a clear geographic area. Local search ads let you target people searching in your city or zip code with precision.
  • Purchase decisions are made quickly. If someone is ready to buy or hire the day they search, Google captures that moment perfectly.
  • Your average customer value is high enough to support the cost-per-click. Some Google search terms are expensive — $10–$30+ per click in competitive industries — so your margins and conversion rate need to support that.

When Facebook Ads Win

Facebook and Instagram ads tend to outperform when:

  • You're building awareness for a product or service people don't yet know to search for. If people don't know your product exists, they can't search for it. Facebook lets you put it in front of them.
  • Your audience can be defined by demographics, interests, or behaviors. A gym targeting 25–45 year olds within 5 miles who are interested in fitness is a natural fit for Facebook's targeting.
  • Your product or service is visual. Restaurants, home decor, clothing, real estate, and event venues all benefit from the visual nature of the feed.
  • You're retargeting past website visitors. Facebook's retargeting pixel is one of the most effective tools in digital marketing. Someone visits your site, leaves, and then sees your ad on Facebook — it works extremely well.
  • You're promoting an offer, event, or limited-time deal. Facebook's broad reach makes it ideal for getting the word out quickly.

What About Budget?

Both platforms can work with modest budgets, but they scale differently. Google Ads for local service businesses can often show meaningful results starting around $500–$1,000/month, though competitive industries require more. Facebook Ads can generate awareness and leads at lower cost-per-impression, but often require more creative testing and longer timelines before you find a winning formula.

Our recommendation for most local service businesses: Start with Google Ads to capture the people actively looking for you right now. Once that's profitable and dialed in, layer in Facebook Ads for brand awareness and retargeting.

The Real Answer: Both, Eventually

The most successful businesses we work with use both platforms — but strategically, not just throwing money at both at once. They start with the platform that most directly matches their sales cycle and build from there.
